Midwest Medical Center hosts Prostate Cancer Fighter & Survivor Breakfast September 17

Dr. Peter Colegrove, Urologist
Midwest Medical Center

This September marks the 25th anniversary of recognizing National Prostate Awareness Month. Much has changed in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer these past 25 years but its incidence has not reduced. It remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers with more than a quarter million men diagnosed annually. Nearly 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime with a higher incidence in men with African American heritage or family history of prostate cancer.

Unfortunately, there are relatively few symptoms to alert men that they may have a developing health issue. September provides a time to educate men about prostate cancer and its management but more importantly to highlight the importance of early detection.

Fortunately, early detection can lead to successful treatment for most men diagnosed with more aggressive or life-threatening prostate cancer. I encourage men age 50 or older to strongly consider annual screening with a serum PSA test and even earlier for men with a family history of prostate cancer.

A majority of men will be diagnosed with a less aggressive form of prostate cancer often referred to as low-grade disease. Over the past 20 years we have learned that many of these men may be safely observed through active surveillance programs.  These newer management strategies as well as new developments in treatment for metastatic prostate cancer emphasize the complexity of navigating the topic of prostate cancer. It underscores the importance of providing accurate and relevant guidance for men facing a prostate cancer diagnosis. Our Urologic team at Midwest Medical Center can help men navigate screening, detection and management of prostate cancer.

Join us this September to support those battling prostate cancer, honor survivors and remember those we have lost. By spreading awareness, we can impact the lives of many men and their families.
